About Campalabo Islet

Campalabo Islet is a roughly one-hectare white sandbar off Barangay Tajao, on Pinamungajan's coastline, and is often called the pride of the town since it's the only sandbar of its kind in Cebu's entire third district. The bar grows and shrinks with the tide, reaching its fullest size at low tide and mostly submerging at high tide, which makes timing the visit around the tide schedule worthwhile. Local lore ties the name to "kampana," a big church bell supposedly stolen and thrown into the sea here during the Spanish colonial period, with residents believing the sandbar rose in the bell's place. Nearby, a roughly two-kilometer rock formation, locally called a "paril," formed after a 1951 typhoon and adds to the area's character. The surrounding waters include a marine sanctuary good for snorkeling. There are no cottages on the islet itself, only a small Bantay Dagat post for shade, so visitors bring their own food, drinks, and any shelter they want.

What makes it worth it

Highlights

  • Only sandbar in Cebu's entire third district
  • Tide-dependent white sandbar that changes size through the day
  • Nearby marine sanctuary for snorkeling
  • Historic "kampana" (church bell) legend
  • Post-1951-typhoon rock formation (paril) nearby

Tips for visitors
  1. 1 Bring your own food, drinks, and shade (umbrella or portable canopy) since there are no cottages and tents are not allowed. Time your trip around low tide for the widest sandbar; ask the boatman for the day's tide schedule. Practice leave-no-trace, as the site has minimal facilities. Location approximate — confirm the exact boat landing on arrival.
