Poro Marine Sanctuaries
Two barangay-managed reef sanctuaries, in Esperanza and Libertad, with mangroves and reef fish for snorkeling.
The overview
About Poro Marine Sanctuaries
Poro maintains two community-managed marine protected areas on opposite sides of the island: Esperanza Marine Sanctuary, a roughly 1.3-kilometer stretch fringed with mangroves and branching coral, and Libertad Marine Sanctuary on the island's other coast. Together they're considered among the better snorkeling and shore-diving spots in the Camotes group, with reef fish including parrotfish, damselfish, and clownfish moving through coral structures close to shore. Esperanza's sanctuary sits about 15 minutes from the Poro town hall and is the more frequently visited of the two, with boatmen and small resorts along the coast arranging snorkel trips out to the reef. Coral cover here has had rough patches — a 2010 provincial report flagged the sanctuary's corals as struggling, likely from a mix of storm damage and past destructive fishing — so recovery has been gradual rather than complete, and visitors should expect a mix of healthy and recovering reef sections rather than pristine coral throughout. Both sanctuaries are no-take zones enforced by the barangay, and a caretaker or boatman can arrange gear rental and a guided snorkel out to the reef markers.
