The overview

About Bantayan sa Hari & Puerta dela Marina

Bantayan sa Hari refers to two Spanish-era watchtowers that once stood about 100 meters apart along the Ginatilan coastline, stretching from Barangay Poblacion toward Barangay Guiwanon. They were built following an 1825 decree by Alcalde Mayor Don Manuel Romera ordering coastal towns to construct two-story watchtowers as defense against Moro raids from Mindanao, part of a province-wide network of baluartes built in towns across southern Cebu. Connecting the towers was Puerta de la Marina, a walled gateway of coral stone and lime mortar that controlled access between the town and the sea, supporting both coastal defense and fishing activity. The name Bantayan sa Hari translates to "the king's watch," a reference to their construction under Spanish crown authority. What remains today are heritage ruins rather than a fully intact structure, and they're recognized locally as part of Ginatilan's tourism and heritage trail alongside the parish church and Millennium Park. The site gives a sense of how vulnerable coastal towns in this part of Cebu were to raids during the Spanish colonial period, and how they organized collective defense along the shoreline.
