The overview
About Casa Real (Balay Lungsod sa Argao)
Casa Real, also known locally as Balay Lungsod sa Argao, is widely cited as the oldest surviving municipal hall in Cebu province. It fronts Argao's town plaza on Rizal Street and is a classic bahay-na-bato: a lower level of coral-stone masonry topped by a second floor built entirely of wood, a construction style typical of Spanish-era Philippine civic buildings. A sign on the building reads "Bahay Lungsod sa Argao, 1608," though most architectural accounts date the present structure to the 1880s, when it was rebuilt as the town's ayuntamiento (administrative hall). The ground floor still functions as part of Argao's municipal government complex, while the upper floor has been converted into a small heritage museum displaying old photographs, period clothing, and household implements documenting the town's history. Argao's identity as the "Torta Capital" of Cebu is tied to this same colonial-era building boom: legend holds that the surplus egg yolks left over after using egg whites to bind the coral stone of Argao's church and civic buildings were baked into the torta pastry the town is now famous for. The building was damaged by the 2013 Bohol earthquake, and in 2023 the Cebu provincial government pledged funding toward its restoration as one of the province's protected heritage structures. It remains an active government building rather than a formal tourist facility, so museum access is informal and best arranged in person.
