About Bugho Falls

Bugho Falls, also known locally as Kawasan sa Bugho, is a multi-tiered waterfall tucked in the interior barangay of Bugho, near San Fernando's border with Pinamungahan. Unlike the developed falls of southern Cebu, Bugho remains largely unmarketed, drawing only a trickle of hikers and campers willing to make the trek. The falls tumble over several rock levels into pools deep enough for swimming, including a small natural jacuzzi-like basin reached by scrambling over boulders. Shallow sections near the base suit wading and picnicking, while the surrounding forest and river rocks give the area a raw, undeveloped feel. Reaching Bugho Falls means wading through a river and picking a path across slippery boulders, so what guides describe as a one-hour walk can stretch past three hours for less experienced trekkers. Flow is strongest during the rainy months and noticeably thinner once the dry season sets in.

What makes it worth it

Highlights

  • Multi-tiered waterfall
  • Natural rock-pool 'jacuzzi'
  • Deep swimming pool and shallow wading areas
  • River-crossing approach trek
  • Largely undeveloped, off-the-beaten-path setting
  • Strongest flow in rainy season
Tips for visitors
  1. 1 Wear sturdy footwear with good grip for the slippery river rocks, and expect to get wet on the approach. Hire a local guide in Barangay Bugho since the trail is unmarked and crosses the river multiple times. Visit during or right after the rainy season for a fuller flow.
