About Catarman Mangrove Park & Bird Sanctuary

Catarman Mangrove Park & Bird Sanctuary sits along the shallows of Bantayan Bay fronting Barangay Catarman in Cordova, part of a mangrove belt that stretches across the town's coastal barangays of Pilipog, Bangbang, San Miguel, Day-as, and Catarman, together covering close to 100 hectares. The dense, low-growing mangrove patches and shallow tidal flats attract migratory birds passing through the flyway between Siberia, China, and Japan, with numbers building from September through March alongside resident shorebirds and herons. The main way to experience the area is by water. Local operators rent kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards for guided paddles through the narrow mangrove channels, best done at high tide when boats can glide directly among the roots and birds are easier to spot from the water. Multi-hour tours combining paddling with a look at the sanctuary are also offered by community-based operators as part of Cordova's push to develop mangrove-based ecotourism. This is a working conservation area as much as a tourist stop, and the mangroves also function as a natural buffer against storm surge for the coastal barangays. Facilities are basic and centered on the paddling operators along the shore rather than a formal park compound, so visitors should arrange a guide or rental ahead of time rather than expecting a staffed entrance.

What makes it worth it

Highlights

  • Shallow mangrove channels for paddling
  • Migratory birds September to March
  • Kayak, canoe, and SUP rentals
  • Best explored at high tide
  • Community-run ecotourism paddles
  • Part of Cordova's ~100-hectare mangrove belt
Tips for visitors
  1. 1 Time your visit around high tide so boats can move freely among the mangroves; low tide can leave channels too shallow to paddle. Bring sun protection, water, and a dry bag for phones or cameras. Book a kayak, canoe, or SUP rental with a local operator in advance, especially on weekends. Location approximate — confirm on arrival.
