The overview
About Ibo Falls
Ibo Falls is a multi-level jungle waterfall in Barangay Balao, Barili, only recently opened up to visitors by the local tourism office and still largely absent from mainstream South Cebu maps. The first level opens into a wide, deep-blue swimming hole, while a second level upstream, roughly 61 meters (200 feet) in a stepped rather than sheer drop, flows through a narrow rock canyon with unusual limestone formations. Reaching the falls means walking dirt paths through farmland before following the river upstream on foot, wading through shallow stretches and scrambling over a few rocky, hard-to-pass sections. The hike takes about 30-40 minutes each way at an easy pace with stops for photos, but the trail is not consistently marked and crosses private land, so a local guide is effectively required. Because the site sees far fewer visitors than Mantayupan Falls, the pools tend to be quieter and the setting feels more remote. Travelers based in Moalboal can reach it in about 30 minutes by road, making it a workable detour from the south coast dive circuit.
What makes it worth it
Highlights
- Multi-level falls with a canyon-like second tier
- Deep natural swimming hole at the first level
- Unusual rock formations along the river
- Quiet, low-crowd alternative to Mantayupan
- River trek through farmland and jungle
- About 30 minutes from Moalboal
- 1 Arrange a guide in advance through the Barili municipal tourism office since the trail is unmarked and crosses private property. Wear water shoes or trail sandals with grip for the river crossings, and bring a dry bag. Go during the dry season, as the river crossing gets harder and more dangerous after heavy rain.
