The overview
About Kaongkod Watchtower
Kaongkod Watchtower is a Spanish-era ruin standing in Barangay Kaongkod, on the northern tip of Bantayan Island, roughly four kilometers from the old Kota fort in Madridejos town. It was built in the 1840s under the direction of Fr. Doroteo Andrada del Rosario, the parish priest who oversaw construction of a chain of watchtowers and forts meant to spot Moro raiding vessels approaching from the sea and warn townsfolk in time to take shelter or evacuate. Of the network of watchtowers that once ringed Bantayan, Kaongkod is the last one still standing largely intact, its coral-stone walls weathered but unbroken. There are no interpretive signs or ticket booth here; it survives mainly because locals have left it alone, and today it doubles as an informal gathering spot for students from the surrounding barangay. The site is not actively managed or restored by any heritage agency, so what visitors see is the structure much as it has stood for roughly 180 years, cracked walls, moss and all. It rewards a visit chiefly for its history and quiet coastal setting rather than any built-up visitor experience.
