The overview
About Mount Lantoy Cave
Mount Lantoy is a 593-meter mountain roughly 7-10 kilometers inland from Argao town proper, protected since 1994 as a watershed forest reserve. In Visayan folklore, it is the domain of Maria Cacao, a diwata said to tend a cacao plantation on the mountainside and to sail a golden ship downriver whenever floodwaters rise, one of the best-known mountain-goddess legends in the Philippines alongside Maria Makiling and Maria Sinukuan. High on the mountain, a small cave is pointed to by locals and guides as Maria Cacao's dwelling. Unlike the larger Balay sa Agta system nearby, this cave has a notably tight, narrow mouth that requires visitors to squeeze through to reach the interior, which opens into a compact chamber with rock and stalactite formations. Because Mount Lantoy sits inside a protected watershed area, access is restricted and a permit and guide arranged through the Argao Tourism Office are required before setting out. The hike combines forest trekking with the caving stint at the top, and the surrounding reserve offers cliffs, small waterfalls, and lookout points along the way. Trips are best planned as a full guided outing rather than an independent hike, given the permit requirement and the mountain's remoteness.
What makes it worth it
Highlights
- Legend of Maria Cacao and her golden ship
- Protected watershed forest reserve
- Narrow, squeeze-through cave entrance
- Rock and stalactite formations inside
- Forest trekking with waterfalls and viewpoints
- Mandatory permit and guide system
- 1 Register with the Argao Tourism Office days ahead to arrange the required permit and guide; independent hikes into the watershed reserve are discouraged. The cave mouth is genuinely tight, so it isn't suited to larger frames or anyone uneasy in confined spaces. Bring hiking shoes, water, and a flashlight or headlamp.
