The overview
About Mt. Manunggal
Mt. Manunggal rises 982 meters above sea level in Barangay Magsaysay, Balamban, making it the third-highest peak on Cebu Island after Osmeña Peak and Lugsangan Peak. The mountain is best known as the crash site of the presidential plane "Mt. Pinatubo," which went down on March 17, 1957, killing President Ramon Magsaysay and 24 others. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines declared the site a National Historical Landmark in 2012. At the summit campsite, a monument to President Magsaysay stands beside a recovered engine cylinder block from the wreckage, drawing history buffs alongside hikers. An annual commemorative trek is held around the anniversary of the crash, and the mountain has since become one of Cebu's most popular hiking and camping destinations, with cool highland air and wide ridge views over the island's interior. Most trekkers approach via the uplands of Tagba-o or Cantipla in Tabunan, on the Cebu City side of the range, following farm trails through onion, tomato, and cabbage plots before climbing the steeper final stretch to the summit plateau.
