The overview

About Mt. Mauyog

Mt. Mauyog is a 1,027-meter peak in Barangay Sunog, Balamban, one of the highest points in Cebu province. The mountain draws trekkers for its distinctive summit rock formation, a cluster of weathered coral rock that resembles a human brain and shifts slightly underfoot, which locals say is how the peak earned its name ("mauyog" meaning loose or shaky). The trail is steep and narrow for most of the ascent, requiring real endurance rather than a casual walk, which keeps the mountain popular with experienced trekkers and less crowded than nearby Mt. Manunggal. Hikers often combine both peaks in a single day trek, entering via Tabunan or Barangay Sunog and connecting along the ridge trails between them. At the summit, the payoff is a wide highland panorama over Balamban's mountain interior, plus the novelty of standing on and photographing the brain-like rock outcrop that has made the peak popular with hikers and photographers alike.
