Plaza Independencia
About Plaza Independencia
Plaza Independencia is one of Cebu City's oldest public spaces, dating to the Spanish colonial period when it served as the Plaza de Armas and later Plaza Mayor, the parade ground directly facing Fort San Pedro. Over the centuries it was renamed several times, including Plaza de Maria Cristina under later Spanish rule and Plaza Libertad during the American period, before settling on its current name before World War II. The plaza sits beside Fort San Pedro and encloses landscaped grounds, walking paths, a fountain, and a monument to Spanish navigator and first Philippine governor-general Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. In 2006, construction of the SRP tunnel beneath the plaza uncovered pre-Hispanic human remains and earthenware, adding archaeological weight to a site already central to Cebu's colonial history. Today it functions as a public park in the middle of the historic waterfront district, connecting Fort San Pedro, the National Museum of the Philippines - Cebu, and the piers, and it remains a venue for civic events and gatherings.
