The overview
About Santander Watchtower (Poblacion)
The Santander Watchtower is a 19th-century baluarte built from coral stone and lime mortar (mamposteria), standing behind the town's St. Gabriel the Archangel Church and facing the sea. It was one of a chain of watchtowers commissioned under Fray Julian Bermejo in the early 1800s to guard Cebu's coastal towns against Moro slave raids coming through the Tañon and Cebu straits. Santander, then known as Tañon, sat at a strategically important point where the two straits met, making its watchtowers among the more critical links in the province-wide defense network. Sentries stationed here would relay warnings northward toward Oslob and beyond using a system of signal flags whenever raiders were spotted offshore. Today the structure shows the wear of two centuries, with the coral stone eroding in places, though sections of the original plaster finish remain visible on the upper levels. It stands as a modest but tangible reminder of the province's colonial-era coastal defenses, best paired with a visit to the better-preserved sister watchtower in Barangay Liloan.
