The overview
About Yap Ancestral House
The Yap Ancestral House, also referred to as the Yap-Rodriguez House, is a bahay na bato built in 1905 along what is now Jose Rizal Street in Carcar City. It was erected by the couple Juan Ramos Rodriguez, a mestizo espanol, and Consolacion Florido Yap, a mestiza china, several years after their 1892 marriage. Records credit Salustiano (or Gonzalo) Abellana as architect and Andres Cui as chief carpenter, with a 1936 renovation carried out under designer Mariano Mercado and chief carpenter Ceferino Bargamento. Distinct from the better-known Balay na Tisa, the Yap house is recognized for its blue-and-white painted facade and early 20th-century Visayan colonial architectural details. Its historical significance extends beyond Carcar: a scaled-down replica of the house, minus its azotea, was built as the representative Visayan house at the former Nayong Pilipino cultural park in Paranaque, introducing generations of visitors to Carcar's residential architecture. The house remains privately held and is generally viewed from the street as part of a heritage walk through Carcar's old town, alongside Balay na Tisa, Silva House, and Ang Dakong Balay.
