The overview
About Dapdap-Esperanza Mangrove Reserve
The Dapdap-Esperanza Marine Sanctuary and Mangrove Reserve protects one of the more intact mangrove stands on Ponson Island, spanning the coastline shared by barangays Dapdap and Esperanza in Pilar. Scientific surveys have recorded 26 of the 31 true mangrove species found across the whole Camotes group growing here, on a sandy-muddy shoreline dominated by Avicennia and Sonneratia trees, making it one of the more species-rich mangrove areas in the province. The reserve sits within Pilar's wider municipal marine park system, which also includes an offshore no-take sanctuary; the marine park was recognized as the Philippines' outstanding Marine Protected Area in 2009. Two locally rare species, Camptostemon philippinense and Scyphiphora hydrophylacea, have been recorded on Ponson Island only here and in neighboring Poro. There's no boardwalk or visitor center at Dapdap-Esperanza. The mangroves are best seen from a hired boat or kayak along the shoreline, arranged through a Cawit resort or barangay officials. Illegal cutting and firewood gathering remain pressures on the forest, so visits are best kept low-impact.
