The overview

About Mount Manghilao

Mount Manghilao is one of the tallest points rising inland from Danao City's coastal plain, in the upland barangay of Masaba. Sources differ on its exact height, with figures ranging from roughly 629 to 700 meters above sea level, but it is consistently cited as one of Danao's highest peaks. The summit is marked by a large wooden cross that has made the mountain one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in northern Cebu; local tradition ties the devotion to the Spanish colonial period, and the cross itself has reportedly been rebuilt several times after decay and lightning strikes. A couple of small caves near the trail add to the mountain's mix of history and folklore, though they are short and require some squeezing to enter. The climb from the Masaba trailhead near P.G. Almendras Elementary School takes roughly 30-45 minutes one way over a well-worn path with some loose rock and slippery clay sections, especially after rain. It is considered manageable even for casual hikers, which is why entire families make the trek during Lent. At the top, the cross and the clearing around it open onto panoramic views of Danao City, the Camotes Sea, and the ridge of neighboring Mount Lantawan to the west. The site is busiest during Holy Week and the May Santa Cruz season, when pilgrims climb to light candles and pray; on ordinary days it is a quiet, short hike popular with locals for exercise and the view.
