The overview
About Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza Church
Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza Church is the Neo-Gothic parish church of Sibonga, standing on a site first used as an Augustinian visita chapel in 1690 and formally raised to a parish in 1830. The present stone-and-coral building went up starting in 1866 and construction dragged on through the upheaval of the Philippine Revolution before it was finally completed and inaugurated in 1907. Its facade carries pointed-arch openings, twin bell towers with rose windows, and carved stone acanthus and tassel details typical of the Gothic Revival style favored by 19th-century friar-builders in Cebu. The church's best-known feature is its painted ceiling, executed in 1924 by Cebuano artist Raymundo Francia, who also painted the ceiling of Argao Church further south. Francia's frescoes depict biblical scenes and catechetical imagery across the nave vault, done in a trompe-l'oeil style that gives the flat ceiling an illusion of depth. In 2023 the National Museum of the Philippines designated the church a National Cultural Treasure, and it already carried a National Historical Commission marker installed in 2010. The church sits in Poblacion, right at the town center, and is still an active parish under the Archdiocese of Cebu, so visits are easiest outside Mass hours if you want to look closely at the ceiling work.
