About Sts. Peter and Paul Church

The Sts. Peter and Paul Church, commonly known as Bantayan Church, holds the distinction of being the oldest parish in the Visayas and Mindanao, established by Augustinian friars on June 11, 1580. This makes it one of the most historically significant religious sites in the Philippines outside of Manila. The church was originally founded as the Convento de la Asuncion de Nuestra Senora and was once under the direct supervision of the Diocese of Manila and the Archdiocese of Mexico. The original structure was destroyed multiple times - by Muslim raiders in 1600, again in 1628 when many townsfolk were captured, and in 1754 during another onslaught. The present church was constructed between 1839 and 1863 under Fr. Doroteo Andrada del Rosario. Built with coral stones bound together by a mixture of tree sap and limestone, the church stands as a testament to Spanish colonial architecture and the resilience of the local community. The interior features beautiful ceiling murals painted in 2018, adding vibrant artistry to the historic structure. A unique piece of history: in 1824, Pope Leo XII granted the residents of Bantayan an exemption from the practice of abstinence from meat during Lent - an indult that reportedly still stands today.
