About Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Church
Our Lady of Sorrows Parish anchors the heritage cluster around Ronda Plaza in Barangay Poblacion, alongside the municipal hall and town market. The parish was formally established on June 17, 1881, when it separated from the larger parish of Dumanjug; before that, the settlement (then called Holoyaw) was only a visita under Dumanjug's jurisdiction. The delay in becoming its own parish was largely due to Ronda's small population through the nineteenth century. The church was originally dedicated to the Purisima Concepcion de la Virgen Maria before being rededicated to Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, the Our Lady of Sorrows title it still carries. Its first structure was a provisional wood-and-cogon building that no longer stands; a more permanent concrete church went up in the mid-20th century, though shifting ground has left cracking along its walls, especially behind the altar. Today the church remains the parish seat under the Archdiocese of Cebu, holding regular Sunday and Friday Masses, with its biggest celebration falling on the September 15 feast day honoring Our Lady of Sorrows.
