The overview
About Patrocinio de Maria Santisima Parish Church
The Archdiocesan Shrine of Nuestra Senora Patrocinio de Maria Santisima, known simply as Boljoon Church, is an 18th-century fortress church built of coral stone on a low hill facing the sea. Construction of the present structure began in 1783 under Fr. Ambrosio Otero, though the parish itself traces back to a chapel founded in 1599. Twenty-eight interior pillars support walls roughly two meters thick, built heavy enough to double as a refuge and defensive position during Moro pirate raids. The church has been declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines and a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission. It was also included in 2006 as a tentative extension to the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Baroque Churches of the Philippines, alongside four other churches around the country. Inside, visitors can view the retablo, carved pulpit panels (a set stolen in the 1980s resurfaced decades later at the National Museum), and the venerated image of Nuestra Senora Patrocinio de Maria, which has received a pontifical coronation. The church anchors a small heritage complex that also includes El Gran Baluarte watchtower and the parish museum next door.
