Redemptorist Church (Our Mother of Perpetual Help)
About Redemptorist Church (Our Mother of Perpetual Help)
The Redemptorist Church, formally the Parish of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, is one of Cebu City's most visited churches thanks to its famous Wednesday novena, a devotion the Redemptorist missionaries introduced in the Philippines in September 1946. The Romanesque-style church, completed and inaugurated in June 1950, features twin bell towers and sits along R. Aboitiz Street near Gen. Maxilom (Mango) Avenue. Every Wednesday, the novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help is recited eleven times over the course of the day, drawing crowds comparable to Sunday Mass and making the church one of the busiest in the city on that single day of the week. Outside novena hours, it functions as a regular parish with a full daily Mass schedule. The Redemptorists first arrived in the Philippines in the early 20th century and established their Cebu community shortly after, making this church part of a broader network of Redemptorist devotion centers across the country, of which the Cebu novena remains one of the earliest and most enduring.
