The overview
About San Guillermo de Aquitania Parish Church
San Guillermo de Aquitania Parish, popularly known as Catmon Church, is a Spanish-era coral stone church in the town's poblacion. Catmon was declared an independent parish from Danao on January 1, 1835, with the erection confirmed by episcopal decree that November. Construction of the present church stretched over decades under a succession of Augustinian Recollect priests: Padre Manuel Gimenez raised the walls and roof framework (first covered in nipa and cogon), while Padre Ramon Miramon later completed the facade and belfry dome, finishing the structure in 1875. Local masons and carpenters were trained for the work by Fray Juan Juseu, parish priest from 1856 to 1864. Behind the church stand the ruins of the Escuela Catolica, a coral-stone school building put up in 1879 by Padre Francisco Bergasa and destroyed during a skirmish in the Spanish-American War of 1899. Nearby is the Bantayan sa Hari, an octagonal watchtower and fort built around 1835-1842 from coral rubble and argamasa, with a wall reportedly 7 meters high and 1 meter thick, positioned on a hill overlooking the sea to warn of pirate raids. Today the church remains an active parish and the visual anchor of the town center, with the watchtower ruins and old school walls offering a compact, walkable heritage circuit for visitors passing through northern Cebu.
