The overview
About San Vicente Marine Sanctuary
San Vicente Marine Sanctuary is a community-run fish and coral conservation area on Olango Island, part of the island group across the channel from Mactan. Decades ago the reef here was badly degraded by dynamite fishing and shell harvesting; the barangay, working with local Bantay Dagat volunteers, closed the area off to destructive practices and let the reef and mangroves recover, and the site is now considered one of the more extensive reef stretches in Central Visayas. A roughly 500-meter bamboo boardwalk cuts through healthy mangrove stands and ends at an over-water viewing platform looking toward Cebu and Mactan. From the boardwalk and surrounding shallows, visitors can snorkel, feed fish, paddle, or arrange an introductory scuba dive, and overnight camping is possible with prior arrangement. As part of the Olango Island group, it sits near the separately protected Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary, making the two a natural pairing for a full day out on the island.
