The overview
About St. Gregory the Great Parish Church
St. Gregory the Great Parish Church traces its origins to February 2, 1829, when it was built as a modest chapel under the Samboan parish before gaining independent parish status on October 5, 1847. The structure follows a Baroque, transept-style layout and was built from coral stone and lime mortar, materials typical of Spanish-colonial church construction in southern Cebu. The church sits in the town proper of Ginatilan and remains an active parish serving the municipality, with its patronal feast celebrated every March. Its coral-stone walls and colonial-era form make it one of the more tangible heritage landmarks in a town otherwise known for its natural attractions like Inambakan Falls and Mount Hambubuyog. Ginatilan is also known as the birthplace of St. Pedro Calungsod, a Filipino Catholic martyr, which adds another layer of religious significance to the town beyond this church itself. Visitors often combine a stop here with the nearby Millennium Park, lighthouse, and old watchtower ruins, all within walking distance in the town center.
