The overview
About St. James the Apostle Parish Church
St. James the Apostle Parish Church, also known as the Archdiocesan Shrine of Santiago Apostol de Compostela, is the oldest and most significant religious landmark in Compostela town proper. The parish was carved out of the mother parish of Danao on July 21, 1865, with Fr. Manuel Alonzo installed as its first priest, and the stone church that stands today was completed the following year. An inscription above the entrance still reads "Sr. Santiago Apostol de Compostela, Año de 1866," marking the building's completion date. The church follows a restrained Romanesque design with an unadorned 19th-century facade, a porte-cochere fronted by Tuscan pilasters, and a rose window set into an elaborate pediment. Cardinal Ricardo Vidal elevated the parish to archdiocesan shrine status on July 24, 2007, in recognition of its historical and spiritual weight in northern Cebu. The church remains an active parish at the center of Compostela's Poblacion, holding daily and Sunday masses along with a nightly Holy Rosary. Its feast day falls on July 25, celebrated locally through the Queseo Festival.
