The overview
About Sto. Niño Parish Church
Sto. Niño Parish Church is the oldest church in the Camotes Islands, its parish founded in 1847 and the current structure built two years later under Spanish friars Nicolas Gonzales and Ambrocio Yturriaga. The walls carry the thick, rough-cut look of coral stone and lime-bound tabique pampango construction typical of 19th-century Visayan mission churches, left largely unpainted and weathered by more than a century and a half of sea air. The facade is simply detailed but distinctive, carved with eight-pronged suns, half and full moons, and faux columns framing a niche that holds an image of the Sto. Niño. A separate bell tower stands a few meters to the right of the main structure; the original was destroyed and rebuilt in pink-toned masonry in the 1960s. Step inside and the mood shifts entirely — green walls and a yellow barrel ceiling replace the exterior's weathered stone character with a plainer, modern parish interior. As the first parish established on Poro Island, the church anchors the town's Eastern Poblacion and remains an active place of worship rather than a museum piece, so visits are best kept brief and respectful around Mass schedules.
