The overview
About Virgen de la Regla Parish Church
The Virgen de la Regla Parish and National Shrine sits in Barangay Poblacion, the historic heart of Lapu-Lapu City. Devotion to Nuestra Señora de Regla (Our Lady of the Rule) began in 1735 when Fr. Francisco Avalle, an Augustinian who had lived at the Virgin's shrine in Chipiona, Spain, introduced her image to the local Oponganon population; the parish itself traces further back, and the original stone church was built between 1735 and 1744. Administration passed through Augustinian, Jesuit, Redemptorist, and, since 1929, Missionaries of the Sacred Heart hands. The Spanish-era church no longer stands. It was torn down in 1960 and replaced with the concrete structure seen today, featuring a stepped entrance, an inverted-arch stained-glass window over the doorway, and a five-level bell tower. The Marian image was canonically crowned in 1954, and the shrine received national shrine status in 1999. Each November 21, the feast draws crowds for a fluvial procession and the citywide Garbo sa Lapulapu festival, one of the city's major cultural events alongside the Kadaugan sa Mactan celebrations.
