The spring carries historical weight for the town: Alcantara was once known as "Kugtong," named after a giant fish (locally identified with a large grouper) said to have lived in the spring's cave-like source before the Spanish era renamed the settlement after Alcántara in Spain. Behind the pool, a small stream carries the spring's overflow toward the sea, creating a point where fresh and salt water meet. The barangay government has carried out rehabilitation work on the site as a cultural landmark, though it remains modest and unstaffed. It is best treated as a quick, authentic look at local daily life rather than a full swimming destination.
