The overview
About Parish Church of San Francisco de Asis
The Parish Church of San Francisco de Asis is the municipality's namesake church, built in the 18th century from coral stone in the same tradition as other Spanish-era churches across the Camotes and Visayas. It stands in the town's poblacion on Pacijan Island, which fell under Spanish administration following the conquest of Cebu and was later brought into the ecclesiastical structure of the Diocese of Cebu, with Augustinian and later Franciscan and Recollect friars extending mission work to the outlying Camotes group. The church has served as the town's main parish since the Spanish period, anchoring the poblacion much as similar coral-stone churches anchor town centers elsewhere in the islands. Its thick coral-stone walls and simple facade reflect construction methods adapted to available local materials rather than imported stone. As an active parish, the church holds regular services, and its plaza area functions as the civic and social center of San Francisco town.
