The overview
About Ponong Hidden Lagoon
Ponong Hidden Lagoon, often called Ponong Lake by locals, is an enclosed body of water fringed by mangrove and bakawan trees in Barangay Poblacion, Samboan. Despite the "lake" nickname, it is technically a lagoon: it sits close to the shoreline and is filled mostly with saltwater that seeps in from the sea, making it brackish rather than fresh. Visitors explore the lagoon aboard simple bamboo rafts poled by a local guide, drifting between stands of mangrove while watching for birds and fish along the banks. The lagoon's best-known draw comes after sunset: as darkness falls, typically from around 6 PM, fireflies gather in the mangroves and light up sections of the shoreline, creating a quiet, small-scale spectacle that draws both local and visiting travelers. The site remains low-key, with no strict schedule beyond daylight-to-evening access, and camping overnight with a personal tent is possible. There is no corkage fee for bringing your own food, though a floating restaurant has been discussed for future development.
