Cebu + Camotes Itinerary (2026): City + Island Escape

A day-by-day 5-day plan that pairs Cebu City and South Cebu with a 2-day, 1-night Camotes Islands escape — ferry timing, costs, and where to sleep each night.

TL;DR: A 5-day plan pairing Cebu City and a South Cebu day trip with a 2-day, 1-night Camotes Islands escape. Day 1: Cebu City heritage (Magellan’s Cross, Fort San Pedro, Temple of Leah). Day 2: Oslob whale sharks and Tumalog Falls as a long day trip. Day 3: bus to Danao Port, ₱300-320 ferry (~2 hrs) to Camotes, Santiago Bay and Lake Danao. Day 4: Buho Rock cliff jumping, Mangodlong Rock, ferry back. Day 5: buffer day and departure. Budget ₱14,500-19,000 per person (~US$250-328). Verified July 2026.

Most Cebu itineraries stop at Oslob, Kawasan, and Moalboal — the well-worn southern loop everyone’s seen photos of. This one adds a genuinely different leg: Camotes Islands, a cluster of islands off Cebu’s east coast with a freshwater lake, cliff-jumping spots, and beaches that still feel uncrowded even in peak season. This plan is built for travelers who have five days, want the classic Cebu City and whale shark highlights, and are willing to spend a couple of hours on a ferry for a slower, quieter second half of the trip. It front-loads the city and Oslob so you’re not backtracking, then swings you north to Danao Port for the crossing. If you’d rather skip Camotes and stack the full south Cebu circuit instead, see our 5-day Cebu itinerary; if Camotes is the whole trip, our dedicated 2-day Camotes itinerary goes deeper on the island itself.

Day 1: Cebu City Heritage

Arrive, settle in, and spend the day in the colonial core before the trip’s two long days. Distances downtown are short, so a Grab or a short walk covers most of it.

Start at Magellan’s Cross on Osmeña Boulevard, the 16th-century monument marking the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines — free entry, and the adjacent Basilica del Santo Niño is one of the oldest churches in the country. Walk five minutes to Fort San Pedro, the Spanish colonial fortification (entrance ₱30). In the afternoon, take a Grab up to Temple of Leah in Barangay Busay (about ₱150-200 from the city center) — entrance runs ₱120 on weekdays and ₱150 on weekends, with parking an extra ₱50 if you’re driving. It’s a Roman-style tribute temple with sweeping views over the city, and worth the ride even if the “Cebu’s Taj Mahal” comparisons oversell it.

Where to stay: Base yourself centrally — IT Park or the Ayala area puts you close to both the South Bus Terminal (for Day 2’s Oslob run) and the North Bus Terminal (for Day 3’s trip to Danao). Search Cebu City hotels on Agoda — budget guesthouses run from around ₱800/night, mid-range hotels from ₱2,500-4,000. If you’re flying in, our Mactan-Cebu Airport guide and airport-to-city guide cover the transfer.

Day 2: Oslob Whale Sharks and Tumalog Falls

This is the one brutal wake-up of the trip — 3:30 AM — and it’s worth it. From the South Bus Terminal, a Ceres bus bound for Oslob or Santander costs around ₱200 one-way and takes 3.5-4 hours. Alternatively, book a guided Oslob day tour on Klook for ₱2,500-3,500 per person, which bundles transport, the whale shark fee, and usually Tumalog Falls — the easier call if the overnight bus schedule doesn’t line up.

Arrive at Barangay Tan-awan before 6 AM to register; slots fill fast. The interaction costs ₱500 to watch from the boat or ₱1,000 to snorkel alongside the whale sharks, and sessions run 30 minutes. Skip the sunscreen — it’s toxic to the sharks. After the whales (done by 8-9 AM), a tricycle to Tumalog Falls (₱250-300 round trip) gets you to a 25-meter cascade dropping into turquoise pools — entrance ₱30. Then it’s the long bus ride back to Cebu City for the night.

How Do You Get From Cebu City to Camotes?

Take a bus or van from Cebu City’s North Bus Terminal to Danao Port, then the Jomalia RoRo ferry to Consuelo, Camotes. There’s no direct route from Cebu City itself — it’s always a two-leg trip. Buses and vans bound for northern Cebu pass through Danao regularly; tell the conductor you’re getting off there, and budget ₱50-60 one-way (roughly ₱100-120 round trip) for the hour-to-hour-and-a-half ride, traffic depending. From the Danao drop-off, a short tricycle gets you to the port.

Jomalia Shipping’s RoRo runs four to five times daily between Danao and Consuelo Port on Poro Island — departures around 5:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 2:30 PM, and 5:30 PM — with the crossing taking about 2 hours. Economy seating is ₱300, air-conditioned ₱320 one-way (roughly US$5-6). Jomalia recommends arriving at the terminal one to two hours before your sailing, so leave Cebu City with buffer room. If you’re flying in and staying near the airport, a Jomalia fastcraft also runs Mactan Wharf to Consuelo (~1.5 hours, ₱500), which skips Danao entirely. Full route comparison, including a third option via Liloan’s Pier 88, is in our how to get to Camotes guide.

Day 3: Ferry to Camotes, Santiago Bay, and Lake Danao

Catch the 8:30 AM sailing out of Danao — the 5:30 AM slot usually isn’t realistic once you factor in the bus leg from Cebu City. You’ll land in Consuelo by roughly 10:30-11 AM with most of the day still ahead of you.

A tricycle from Consuelo Port to Santiago Bay runs 10-15 minutes and ₱50-100. Check into your resort, drop your bags, and get in the water — Santiago Bay is a long, calm, white-sand beach, free to walk onto. Grab lunch at one of the beachfront spots, then head inland to Lake Danao on Pacijan Island, about a 30-40-minute scooter or habal-habal ride. It’s Camotes’ one proper inland attraction — an actual lake ringed by hills, not another cove. Entrance fees here run anywhere from ₱15 to ₱120 depending on the gate; the zipline across the lake costs about ₱200 including the boat back, and kayaks run ₱50 for 30 minutes.

On the ride back, detour to Timubo Cave (₱70 plus a ₱5 environmental fee) or Bukilat Cave (around ₱50) for a freshwater pool swim — bring water shoes if you have them. Close the day with dinner and sunset back at Santiago Bay.

Where to stay: Santiago Bay Garden & Resort is the most bookable option, from around ₱2,081/night; budget fan rooms nearby run ₱800-1,200. Compare Camotes rates on Agoda.

Day 4: Buho Rock, Mangodlong, and the Ferry Back

Spend the morning cliff-jumping, midday at a quieter cove, and leave enough runway to make your return sailing. Buho Rock on Poro Island is a government-managed public jump spot — stairs cut into a cliff lead to clear water, with platforms at roughly 18-20 feet and 40 feet. Entrance is about ₱20 for adults. Look before you leap; there’s no lifeguard actively watching.

A short ride away, Mangodlong Rock is a smaller, more scenic cove next to Mangodlong Paradise Beach Resort, with noticeably clearer turquoise water than the open stretch at Santiago Bay. Day visitors pay around ₱20 (often waived for resort guests). Use the rest of the afternoon for one last swim, return your scooter, and give yourself buffer time to reach Consuelo Port — Jomalia recommends arriving one to two hours early.

Catch the 2:30 PM sailing back to Danao if you want to be in Cebu City that evening, or the 5:30 PM sailing if you’re not in a rush. From Danao, a bus or van gets you back to Cebu City in another hour to hour and a half.

Day 5: Buffer Day and Departure

Build in slack — the last two days involved a long bus, a ferry crossing, and a fair amount of sun. Use the morning for souvenir shopping at Carbon Market or a mall run at Ayala Center or SM Seaside, grab lunch somewhere air-conditioned, and head to Mactan-Cebu International Airport with time to spare. If your flight is later in the day, a short Grab out to Sirao Flower Garden or one more coffee stop in the Busay cafe belt fills the gap without adding real logistics.

If you’d rather skip this buffer entirely and compress the trip to four days, take the 8:30 AM ferry back on Day 4 instead of the afternoon slot and go straight to the airport — see the FAQ below for the tighter version.

How Do You Choose Which Ferry Port to Use?

Danao for most people — it’s the cheapest, most frequent, and doable in a single travel day from Cebu City. Go with Mactan Wharf instead if you’re landing at the airport and want to skip the trip into Cebu City proper, or Liloan’s Pier 88 if you’re already downtown and want the shortest overland leg before boarding, even at a slightly higher fare. Whichever port, this itinerary assumes Danao since it best fits a Cebu City base for Days 1 and 2.

The Honest Take

This itinerary works because it doesn’t try to force Camotes into the middle of the Oslob-Kawasan-Moalboal circuit, which would mean an extra day of backtracking. Doing Oslob as a day trip on Day 2, before heading north, keeps the geography sane. That said, Day 2 is genuinely long — a 3:30 AM start, hours on a bus each way, and you’re back on a bus again the next morning for Danao. If that sounds exhausting rather than adventurous, consider dropping Oslob and giving Camotes a third day instead; it’s a real trade-off, not a box to tick.

Camotes itself is the payoff: it’s quieter than anywhere on the well-known southern route, Lake Danao is a genuine oddity for an island province, and Buho Rock is worth protecting time for if you like cliff jumping. The ferry is the one real risk — sailings suspend in bad weather, and there’s no way to force a crossing back if yours gets cancelled. December through February gives the calmest seas and the most predictable schedule; if you’re traveling outside that window, build a spare half-day into Day 5 in case the return sailing slips.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you combine Cebu City, Oslob whale sharks, and Camotes Islands in one trip?

Yes, and it works better than most people expect because Camotes sits off Cebu's east coast, not its south, so it doesn't force you to backtrack. This itinerary front-loads Cebu City and a south day trip to Oslob, then swings north to Danao Port for the ferry crossing, so you're never retracing the same highway twice.

How many days do you need for a Cebu + Camotes itinerary?

Five days is the realistic minimum: one day for Cebu City, one for an Oslob whale shark day trip, two days and one night in Camotes, and a buffer day for departure. Camotes alone needs at least an overnight since the ferry eats about 2 hours each way, and trying to squeeze it into a single day from Cebu City just isn't realistic.

Which ferry port should you use to reach Camotes from Cebu City?

Danao Port, for most travelers. Jomalia Shipping's Danao-to-Consuelo RoRo is the cheapest crossing at ₱300-320 (about US$5-6) and the most frequent, with four to five sailings a day. If you're based near Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the Jomalia fastcraft from Mactan Wharf to Consuelo (₱500, ~1.5 hours) skips the trip into Danao entirely. See our full breakdown in the ferry guide.

How much does a 5-day Cebu + Camotes trip cost?

Budget roughly ₱14,500-19,000 per person (about US$250-328) for a mid-range trip — accommodation across four nights, the Oslob whale shark day trip, the round-trip Danao-Consuelo ferry, a day of scooter rental in Camotes, entrance fees, and meals. Budget travelers using buses, dorms, and shared scooters can bring this down closer to ₱9,500-11,000.

Is Camotes worth adding to a Cebu itinerary that already includes Oslob and Kawasan?

If you have five days or more and want something quieter than the well-trodden Oslob-Kawasan-Moalboal circuit, yes. Camotes trades canyoneering and sardine runs for a genuinely different pace — an inland lake, cliff jumps, and a beach that isn't shared with a dozen tour vans. If your trip is under four days, skip Camotes and stick to the mainland south.

What's the best order for this itinerary?

City and south first, then north to Camotes. Doing Oslob as a long day trip from Cebu City on Day 2, before you head to Danao Port, avoids doubling back through the city center twice. Trying to fit Camotes in the middle of a south Cebu loop (Oslob, Kawasan, Moalboal) adds a full day of extra transit that this order avoids.

Where should you stay each night?

Cebu City for nights 1 and 2 (central, near IT Park or Ayala, so you're close to both the south-bound buses and the north-bound route to Danao), Santiago Bay in Camotes for night 3, and Cebu City again for night 4 before departure. Booking Cebu City twice separately, rather than one long stay, means you're not carrying full luggage on the Oslob day trip.

What if you only have 4 days instead of 5?

Cut the buffer day and fly out directly from the return ferry day. Catch the 8:30 AM Danao-Consuelo sailing back on Day 4's morning slot instead of the afternoon one, land in Danao by roughly 10:30 AM, and you can be at Mactan-Cebu International Airport for a late-afternoon or evening flight. It's tight, so build in extra time for traffic and don't book anything before 6 PM.
