Whale Shark Watching

About Whale Shark Watching
Oslob's whale shark watching is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Philippines, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Located in Barangay Tan-awan, this activity offers visitors a rare opportunity to swim alongside the world's largest fish - the whale shark or 'butanding' as locals call them. The activity began in 2011 when local fishermen started feeding the whale sharks, and since then, it has transformed the quiet coastal barangay into a bustling tourist destination. At least 208 whale sharks have been recorded off the coast of Tan-awan, with 9 considered permanent residents. Visitors can choose to snorkel or dive with these gentle giants, following strict regulations designed to protect both the animals and swimmers. The experience typically lasts 30 minutes in the water, during which you may see multiple whale sharks feeding on plankton. While the practice of feeding the sharks remains controversial among marine conservationists, the encounter remains a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travelers.
