The overview
About Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary
The Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary is a 920-hectare protected wetland area recognized as one of the seven best-known migratory bird flyways in the world. Located on Olango Island, a barangay of Lapu-Lapu City, this sanctuary serves as a critical resting and feeding ground for migratory birds traveling along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. The sanctuary supports an estimated 77 species of birds, including 48 migratory species that travel from as far as Siberia, northern China, and Japan. During peak migration season (September to November and February to April), birdwatchers can observe thousands of shorebirds, including Chinese egrets, Asiatic dowitchers, and various species of plovers and sandpipers. The wetlands' mudflats and mangroves provide essential habitat for these long-distance travelers. Designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1994, Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary offers a unique eco-tourism experience. A viewing deck and nature trails allow visitors to observe birds without disturbing them. The sanctuary also features an information center with educational displays about the resident and migratory bird species.
