The overview
About St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish Church
St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish Church is one of the most magnificent Spanish colonial churches in Cebu, serving as the centerpiece of Carcar City's rich heritage. Originally built in 1860 and completed in 1875, this Augustinian church showcases stunning baroque architecture with intricate facade details and a commanding presence in the town plaza. The church's exterior features elaborate carvings and religious iconography typical of the Spanish colonial period. Inside, visitors are greeted by high ceilings, beautiful religious artwork, a gilded retablo (altar piece), and antique santos (religious statues). The church has been meticulously maintained, preserving its historical integrity while remaining an active place of worship. The church was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2010, cementing its status as one of the most important heritage structures in the Visayas. Together with the adjacent convent and the Carcar heritage district, it forms the heart of what many consider Cebu's best-preserved colonial town center.
