About Mactan Shrine

Mactan Shrine, also known as Liberty Shrine, is a historic park commemorating the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521 - one of the most significant events in Philippine history. This is where the native chieftain Lapu-Lapu and his warriors defeated the Spanish forces led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who was killed in the battle. The shrine features two prominent monuments: the towering bronze statue of Lapu-Lapu, depicting the heroic chieftain holding a kampilan (traditional sword) and shield, and the much smaller Magellan's Marker, a simple obelisk marking the spot where Magellan supposedly fell. The stark contrast in size between the two monuments reflects the Filipino perspective on the battle. The park also contains murals depicting the historic battle and serves as a venue for the annual Kadaugan sa Mactan festival held every April, which reenacts the famous battle. As a symbol of Filipino resistance against colonization, the shrine holds deep cultural and historical significance for Filipinos and is a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
