Fort San Pedro

About Fort San Pedro

Fort San Pedro is the oldest and smallest triangular bastion fort in the Philippines, originally constructed in 1565 under the command of Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi. The structure that stands today was completed in 1738, built with coral stones by Spanish and indigenous Cebuano laborers. The fort served multiple purposes throughout history: as a military defense structure against Muslim raiders, as a rebel stronghold during the Philippine Revolution, as a barracks during the American period, as an educational institution, and as a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. Its three corners feature bastions named La Concepción, Ignacio de Loyola, and San Miguel, each originally equipped with cannons. Today, Fort San Pedro stands as a monument to Cebu's rich colonial history. The fort walls rise 20 feet high and 8 feet thick, enclosing an area of 2,025 square meters. Inside, visitors can explore the museum displaying artifacts from various periods of Cebu's history, including paintings, sculptures, and historical documents. The fort is surrounded by Plaza Independencia, a pleasant park perfect for afternoon strolls.
