About Heritage of Cebu Monument

The Heritage of Cebu Monument is an impressive sculptural tableau that depicts the key events in Cebu's history, from pre-colonial times through the Spanish and American periods. Designed by renowned Filipino sculptor Eduardo Castrillo, the monument stands in Parian Plaza, a site historically significant as the former center of trade and residence of prominent Cebuano families during the Spanish era. The monument features life-sized bronze and brass sculptures arranged in dramatic scenes, including the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan, the baptism of Rajah Humabon, the Battle of Mactan where Lapu-Lapu defeated Magellan, the Spanish colonial period, and the beatification of Pedro Calungsod, a Cebuano martyr. The tableau effectively brings Cebu's rich history to life, serving as an open-air history lesson. Located at the intersection of Sikatuna and Mabini Streets, the monument is within walking distance of other historical attractions including Colon Street - the oldest street in the Philippines. The surrounding Parian district was once the site of the Saint John the Baptist Church, demolished in 1875.
