About Magellan's Cross

Magellan's Cross is one of the most iconic historical landmarks in the Philippines, marking the spot where Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan planted a Christian cross upon arriving in Cebu on April 21, 1521. This event symbolizes the birth of Christianity in the Philippines and represents one of the most significant moments in the country's colonial history. The original cross is encased inside a hollow tindalo wood cross, placed there in 1835 to protect it from people who chipped away pieces believing the cross possessed miraculous healing powers. The cross is housed in a small chapel, called a kiosk, with a beautifully painted ceiling depicting the baptism of Rajah Humabon and Queen Juana, the first Filipino converts to Christianity. Located on Plaza Sugbo beside the Basilica del Santo Niño and across from Cebu City Hall, the site was collectively declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2021. Visitors will often see devotees lighting candles and praying at the cross, continuing centuries of religious tradition.
